Mapping/Iteration
Brief:
Go for a walk and make several Iterations of a map, starting with noting landmarks along the path and finishing with a functional map.
Iteration 1:
Instead of writing down landmarks I took photos of several prominent Shops/locations on the route I took.
Iteration 2:
During the session I started to sketch a very rough first draft in my notebook from memory (without looking at the photos). I decided to use a simple abbreviated key for the map early on (e.g. SG for St. Georges Building, PH for Playhouse Bar). I found it challenging to get the scale of the buildings and roads correct.
Iteration 3.
For my next draft I switched to A4 paper to try and fit everything on a single page, as the route I walked was relatively short and I did not think it would require a larger size. I kept to the same abbreviation key as before although I did try adding symbols in for places as well (e.g. Cocktail Glass for Bar) in case I wanted to use those exclusively on the next draft. After trying this I decided that I preferred using the abbreviations. After I attempted to sketch out the main parts of the route I realised that I had messed up the scale of the roads and I had made St Georges Street too long and I wasn't too sure how to draw the shape of the river. I scrapped this iteration early on.
Iteration 4:
For this Iteration I sketched out the main route. To try and get the scale right I used a small bit of research/referencing to get the rivers shape. I went out and re-walked my original route but also walked a few different roads to get a feeling of the scale for the map. The first picture below is a photocopy of the Iteration I made so I would be able to write the key on the back of the original (Unfortunately the printer was playing of and centred the map wrong cutting off the top of the map. After writing the Key on the back of the original map I tried to add some extra references in to places off the map and as well try and make the start/end points more visible. In my next Iteration I plan to add a different colour to the map to show the route and the start/end points more clearly.
